Awpr Decision is "Salmond's Copenhagen Slap in the Face"

Latest News. Tue., December 22, 2009. 12:22.

Scottish Green Party Media Release

Today's decision by Scottish Ministers to approve the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route makes a mockery of Alex Salmond's visit to the Copenhagen climate summit, Greens today argued. Ministers rigged the Inquiry to exclude all the key considerations (1), meaning this decision could yet be blocked by a proposed judicial review. If the road is built, it will also cost taxpayers dear, especially in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, draining money away from projects which could have reduced pollution and congestion. (2)

Patrick Harvie MSP said:

"Today, the next working day after the failure of the Copenhagen summit, we see the SNP response to it. Alex Salmond's adminstration has today issued a slap in the face to everyone who wants to see a successful low-carbon Scotland, a Scotland which plays a responsible role internationally. Scottish Ministers may have accepted Parliament's tougher climate targets earlier this year but they are determined not to let those targets improve transport policy.

Copenhagen Summit &Quot;an Abject Failure Not Worth Signing"
Green MSP Media Release
The US-led agreement achieved yesterday away from the all-country talks is entirely unacceptable, Greens today argued, and the party condemned Gordon Brown for endorsing a sham. The final agreement, merely noted by the full conference, contains no legally binding targets and will bring in no new money. As a result, it will be unable to deliver a low carbon global economy, and makes it far less likely that the planet will escape devastating temperature increases of 3°C or worse. [full story]

Budget Would Set Scotland 'on the Wrong Track'
The Green MSPs described today's draft Budget from the SNP as a substantial missed opportunity, and a spending programme apparently unrelated to the social, environmental and economic pressures facing Scotland. (1) Ministers are proposing £87.2m worth of cuts in public transport, alongside an increase in roads spending of more than £30m. (2)
There has been no improvement in the funding allocated to energy efficiency and fuel poverty, and Greens also rejected the Carbon Assessment of the 2010-11 Draft Budget published today by Scottish Ministers as a misleading charade. (3) The Government's assessment skews the carbon costs of infrastructure, making it look as if the Scottish Public Pensions Agency is more than twice as polluting as the entire trunk road budget.
